Uno sguardo all’indietro al teatro Futurista

A look back at the Futurist theater
(observing the future-present?)
The Futurists could be for Italy what the founders of contemporary theatre were for other European countries, from Appia to Graig; from Fuchs to Stanislavskij and Mejerchol’d. Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, initiator of the only Italian avant-garde movement, and his fellow adventurers (Francesco Cangiullo, Luciano Folgore, Enrico Prampolini, Bruno Corra, Emilio Settimelli, and many others) had a clear vision of the process that could and should have profoundly renewed Italian theatre, matching it with that of other countries: a vision expressed in the various manifestos, from the inaugural one of the Futurist playwrights in 1911, to the Manifesto on Variety Theatre, of 1913, from the Manifesto of the Synthetic Futurist Theatre, of 1915, to that on the Theatre of Surprise, of 1921, to name the most important.
However, their paths of scenic writing and performance were not as concretely and permanently innovative (sometimes, and the results were better according to the testimonies of the time, also in collaboration with non-futurist actors and actors, such as Ettore Berti, Gualtiero Tumiati, Annibale Ninchi). In my opinion, it is necessary to consider the theatrical activity of the Futurists, which took place essentially between the 1910s and 1920s, from three points of view: a theoretical one, fundamentally expressed in the aforementioned manifestos; one more realizing in spectacularity, identifiable in the “futurist evenings” of 1915-16 (the most “disruptive” years) in which the promoters of the movement themselves participated; and, finally, a more properly dramaturgical level, consisting of a very large number of written texts defined, as we know, as we know, “synthesis” (we are in the two-year period 1915-1916).
Futurist theory and “invention” (which embraced all artistic fields, from poetry to painting and so on, giving rise to an avant-garde that penetrated throughout Europe) sowed the seed that then developed into transformations and revolutions of theatrical art received over many years and in various European theatrical civilizations, with concrete fruits in terms of reinvention and expressive research. If we want, Futurist theatre is a forerunner of those scenic aspects of today that theatrically theatrify current technological, electronic and computer procedures.
Among the cornerstones of Futurist inventions were: a conception of space and theatrical performance based on the relationship and reciprocal relationships between actors, stage and spectators themselves, in reciprocal processes of action and reaction; the synthesis and simultaneity of actions, in which time and rhythm take on scans typical of a civilization increasingly moving towards dynamism; speed, mechanics (electricity, artificial and neon lighting, telephony and radio, the cinema were radically switching space-time relationships and their conception even in everyday life); fun, invention and the “wonderful”, made through caricature, parody, the grotesque, irony, and again the absurd, the most surprising analogue; transformism, the mocking and irreverent gesture, the destruction of Solemnity, Sacredness, Sublimity, for which psychology must be replaced, for the Futurists, with the “physical-follìa” (upheaval of the nerves, the senses, the mind) and logic with the improbable; The masterpiece, traditionally understood, must be replaced with eccentric and alienating numbers, with “attractions”, in which the “surprise”, the “displacement” are absolute. On a scenic level, the Futurists created the famous “futurist evenings” of synthetic theater, in which, in addition to acting the pre-written “synthesis”, they recited poems, performed sound and percussion concerts also using means of mechanical reproduction, provoked the audience with polemic, ideological, and rallying allocutions, with the air of true performers and against any “passé”, petty-bourgeois, conservative, traditionalist mental scheme. They favored free jokes, simultaneity, interpenetration, the animated poem, the scripted sensation, the dialogic hilarity, the extralogical discussion, the synthetic deformation, the scientific glimmer. They contested, therefore, the literary models from the bourgeois to the historical to the poetic-traditional, and the fixed schemes of reality, the pre-established social and ethical order. Beyond these occasional evenings, which took place in various cities, especially between 1915 and 1916, also taking advantage of the interventionist attitude and the first patriotic war impulses (they preached, as is well known, war “as the only hygiene in the world”), once the impulse given by curiosity for the new was exhausted, they were not able to organize their own fixed companies ready to receive and translate on stage so many radical innovations, theoretically banned but difficult to achieve spectacularly, especially for those who, despite knowing how to be an orator, could not be and/or become an actor; nor did the Futurists know how to organize a loyal and motivated audience to appreciate and share their inventions; nor could they open theatrical spaces suitable for the implementation of the technical and material needs of such a new spectacularity. Only in 1921, a crucial year for Italian theater, was the Futurist Company of the Teatro della Sorpresa formed by Rodolfo De Angelis, together with Marinetti and Cangiullo, and Gino Gori opened the “parafuturist” cabaret “La Bottega del Diavolo” in Rome: but both initiatives were in fact surpassed by the art of Ettore Petrolini, which in turn he was sharing and realizing with great success, and in the context of Variety, many of the assumptions of the Futurist movement, such as: the breaking of the “fourth wall”; the epicizing, estranged, grotesque, parodic and puppet acting, not directly mimetic and representative; as well as the execution of the action in a synthetic and dynamic way, as the action itself was synthesis and speed rather than representing the idea of synthesis and speed .
Even in the initiatives of Marinetti, Cangiullo and De Angelis in the two-year period 1921-1922, the programmatic lines go far beyond the concrete achievements; in fact, we recall some of the directorial ideas suggested by Marinetti for a futurist theatrical style, prelude to forms of scenic writing typical of the theatrical revolutions of the twentieth century, in correspondence with the loss of the monopoly of the entertainment market by prose theater: “essential synthetic geometric eloquence”; “synoptic dynamic declamation”; “fast synthetic” epistolary style; “organized alogical intonations”; invented and original gestures, gaits and facial expressions; significant parts of the human body isolated from projectors in the darkness of the stage; “scenographic brushstrokes” synesthetically expressed through music.
As far as written dramaturgy is concerned, it should be said in passing that starting from Marinetti’s first theatrical works dating back to the “French” years of his cultural activity, Roi Bombance and Poupées électriques (1960), it has not actually passed into the scenic repertoire of Italian theater, remaining mostly written page, demonstrating its strict belonging to a global idea and vision of theater and inseparable in their scenic and textual (written) components: these were ultimately texts also determined by a virtual scenic language of decisive renewal. Therefore, the innovative efforts of writers, poets, painters, musicians, and writers belonging to Futurism were not enough: it would have been necessary for the ranks of the movement to have also included actors capable of strongly innovating and being accepted by the theatrical system, which tends as much as possible to keep in balance the various tendencies, even radically new, that appear on the horizon of the scene: the fact that, in the years in which Futurism appeared in nascent states, at the same time the monopolistic “old-fashioned Italian theater” was waning, prevented a good balance from being established between the very components of the theater-system: the Futurist inventions thus passed into the hands of the many founding fathers of the new European theater.
To conclude, it would be interesting to observe, to catalog in today’s Italian theater what imprints of a varied nature it is possible to find today of the many inventions, ideas, sensitivities open to the technological future that today is our Present! What do you think about it?
